C & O Canal Series

This series of artworks began with biking trips on the C & O Canal towpath.  For those not familiar with it, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Historical Park extends 184.5 miles on the north bank of the Potomac River, from Georgetown in Washington D.C. all the way to Cumberland, MD.  Begun in 1828, parts of the canal itself are devoid of water, but the towpath is maintained for the use of walkers, joggers, bikers and horseback riders.  It's an awesome place to exercise, get away from it all, and enjoy the outdoors.

The Canal is easily accessible from anywhere in Frederick County where I live, so I have had the opportunity to enjoy it, most often by bike.  I usually take my digital camera along and have used the photos as inspiration for my paintings and drawings.  All of the C & O Canal series were created in my home studio.

You will note that none of these artworks actually feature the canal.  Their titles come from the inspiration I derived from trips on the canal towpath.  A painting I'm working on now (Jan. '09) does show the canal at Great Falls, MD.
